Learning is something that happens daily in our house. There is so much to learn in this world that it helps to incorporate learning into things we use and do daily. One of those things is a calendar.
I am teaching Titus about the days of the week, how to track time and the months and also showing him how the wheel of our year turns with the changing of the calendar.
Step one was to gather our craft supplies. We used the following:
Various colored construction paper.
Scissors.
Glue.
Stickers for your monthly theme.
Glitter
And the biggest thing of all, a large thick project board.
Note: Have the right scissors for little hands. I couldn't find his child size scissors and holding them in such an awkward way doesn't help develop those cutting skills much.
Back to the learning bit, something else we added to our calendar is shapes and colors. We used one particular shape for each week to show how the month is broken down into weeks. And having your little ones cut out the shapes is good for their finger dexterity.
On each shape I wrote the number of the day in pencil and had Titus trace over it with a marker. Another way for him to learn to trace and good practice for writing.
I included the constellations because it also shows how our sky's change with the seasons and by learning in what directions the constellations point, he will also learn how to orient himself at night.
Do I have high expectations for a simple calendar project? Perhaps, but so many of the simple things we do can teach so much. Even cooking deals with weights and measures and temperatures and life and growing. So even creating a simple household calendar, you can teach your little one so much and best of all, you are spending creative time with them.
Bright Blessings,
Deva
